Ubuntu is probably the most popular distro, that has insane resource usage and in many cases is more demanding than windows is, if you want to use Ubuntu I recommend Xubuntu instead which swaps the Unity desktop environment it uses for XFCE instead, this fixes the major slowdowns Ubuntu can cause, theres also Linux Mint which is gnome2/3 based instead of Unity (and also has an XFCE version as well as KDE which has alot of eyecandy so can be a bit slower) but otherwise based on Ubuntu, has a much nicer out of the box setup for people migrating from windows. Very lightweight and fast distro but not the most user friendly to some, but I very much like it. With 4 chrome tabs open, I am currently sat at 746mb RAM used and processor hasnt hit more than 20% used with videos going, its liking to sit under 10%.
The same on windows would probably be closer to 40/50gb used. I for example use crunchbang++, I currently have 17.9gb used, this is with steam installed, civ 5 + DLC's installed, a few other smaller games, chrome, favourite text editor, some packages to allow me to develop software in golang. Though this largely depends on which distribution you use (Linux is not just one OS, but many different largely compatible ones based on the Linux kernel that we then call a distribution). It can be much smoother and faster than windows. You dont get linux force upgrading you to windows 10, or force upgrading anything for that matter.Ī fourth one that many will tote but is not true in all circumstances.
Thirdly, frees you from the corporations like apple and microsoft that seek to restrict what you can do on your PC. Secondly, very highly customisable to each individual persons need, some of us love that
